Watering and Timers

An old timer schedule can keep watering long after the weather changes. Review the settings before the season starts and whenever conditions change.

Set a schedule for the site

Use Utah’s Weekly Lawn Watering Guide with your provider’s restrictions. New seed, new sod, established turf, and garden beds do not necessarily use the same schedule. Avoid the old blanket advice to leave every established lawn unwatered until rain returns.

Know what each setting does

Confirm the day, time, active programs, start times, and zone run times in the controller manual. Record the settings before changes. If watering repeats unexpectedly, check for extra program starts.

Pausing is different from winterizing

Rain delay or off mode may pause watering while retaining settings; this depends on the model. Turning the controller off does not drain the irrigation system.

See Rain Bird’s controller manuals and our controller troubleshooting guide.
