Sprinkler Zone Won’t Turn On? Try This

Technician working on irrigation valve components

One zone will not start, but the others work? Note the zone number and whether it runs from the controller’s manual-start function. That information helps narrow the problem before parts are replaced.

Check the controls first

Look for a disabled zone, zero run time, rain delay, or an error message. Confirm that irrigation water is available. A controller screen that says a zone is running does not prove water is reaching the valve.

Use the instructions for your valve

Manual valve operation and electrical tests depend on the model. Start with Rain Bird’s valve manuals or the documentation for your own manufacturer. Do not use a three-battery test as a general diagnostic: solenoids differ, and a click alone does not establish that the whole valve needs replacement.

When to arrange a repair

Stop if you find damaged wiring, a flooded valve box, or water that will not shut off. Switch off the controller before work on low-voltage field wiring; leave mains-voltage repairs to a qualified electrician. Tell the technician which zones fail and any displayed error code. Diagnosis may involve the controller output, wiring, solenoid, valve, or water supply.
