Fixing a Leaky Sprinkler Head

Before replacing a leaking sprinkler head, watch when the water appears. A leak while the zone runs and water draining after shutoff may have different causes.

Water after the zone stops

Hunter’s valve troubleshooting guidance distinguishes low-head drainage from a valve that keeps passing water. Drainage eventually stops as the lateral pipe empties. Continuous seepage may require valve repair; a check valve in the head will not repair a leaking zone valve.

Water while the zone runs

Look for a cracked body, water escaping around the riser, or a damaged connection below the head. Turn off the irrigation supply before disassembly. Match replacement parts to the existing system and follow the product instructions; changing a nozzle can change the coverage and flow requirements.
