Fall Lawn Preparations
Fall is a good time to record sprinkler problems and plan for cold weather. A shutdown appointment and a lawn-care plan serve different purposes; neither guarantees a perfect lawn next spring.
Keep lawn care appropriate to your grass
Do not automatically set the mower to its lowest setting. Use the mowing and fertilization recommendations in USU Extension’s Basic Turfgrass Care. Avoid scalping and follow fertilizer labels rather than adding products on a fixed calendar without considering the lawn.
Check irrigation before shutdown
Make a list of damaged heads, dry areas, and leaks. If a repair must wait, keep the location and zone number with your controller notes.
Prepare for freezing weather
Winterize before freezing conditions, using the method appropriate for your equipment. Hunter’s winterization guidance explains why trapped water can damage pipes and backflow components. Do not wait until the ground is frozen to begin planning.
