The Importance of Catching Sprinkler Leaks Early

A damp spot that never seems to dry is worth checking. Catching a leak early can limit wasted water, but the symptom does not tell you which part has failed.

Record when the leak appears

Does it show up while one zone runs, immediately after shutoff, or all day? Photograph the location and note the zone. That is more useful than replacing a head based only on a puddle.

A dripping head may have more than one cause

Water can drain from low heads after a zone stops. Continued seepage can also point to a valve that is not closing. These need different repairs. Our leaking-head article explains what to record before requesting service.

See EPA WaterSense’s leak inspection guidance and our leaking sprinkler head guide.

Get a diagnosis and repair scope

Ask which component is causing the leak and how the repair will be tested. The amount of water or money saved varies with the leak and the water account; it cannot be promised from a general article.
